Current Volunteer Opportunities

Home Library Service - Book Selectors

Overview: The Duluth Public Library seeks 3-4 volunteers willing to contact Home Library Service patrons and select library materials to be delivered to those individuals.  Patrons who utilize the Home Library Service are in a situation where they cannot physically visit the library.

Duties/Responsibilities: Our Book Selectors (or "Contact") volunteers are assigned to a case load of Home Library Service users with whom they connect on a monthly basis to discuss book interests and requests.  Using the patron's account, volunteer selects, checks out and bags the requested books for the patron, preparing it for delivery volunteers.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per month, minimum of one year commitment encouraged.  Schedule is flexible, depending on volunteer’s availability.

  • Enthusiasm for the Duluth Public Library; friendliness; ability to interact with the public.
  • Able to work independently and with little supervision.
  • Ability to push, bend, stretch, and lift; a bag of materials can weigh up to 22 lbs.
  • Delivery Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Training/Orientation:  All Home Library Service Volunteers are required to attend the basic orientation session and at least 2 hours of additional training provided by the DPL.

  • Satisfaction of providing a much needed service for the community.
  • Chance to meet new people and build new friendships.

Background Check/Screening: Applicants must fill out a Background Check Form and submit references.

To volunteer, please fill out the application and return or any Duluth Public Library location.

Volunteer Movie Attendant

Volunteer Movie Attendants provide a library-related presence during the showing of movies at the library by monitoring the equipment, adjusting the volume of the film if needed, monitoring audience activity and noise level, counting the attendance, directing people to the bathrooms, etc. Volunteers must be available for 3 hours on the day of the movie, arriving 30 minutes early to help set up, staying through the movie, and helping with shut down once the movie is over. They report any concerns/problems to the designated library staff person.

Applicants must be familiar with DVD players, enjoy interacting with both children and adults, and able to provide a calming presence.

To volunteer, please fill out the application and return it to the Main Library's Fiction/Media desk.
