Get Caught Reading!

Get caught reading THE JOY LUCK CLUB by a One Book, One Community committee member during March and receive a "Caught Reading" entry form to fill out. Drop the completed form off at J.W. Beecroft Books & Coffee (3631 Tower Avenue, Superior) for a chance to win a $25 Beecroft Booksense gift card. The drawing will be held
on March 24 at the Joy Luck Club Celebration at Tweed Museum.

 

Literature Circles: THE JOY LUCK CLUB and THE YEAR OF THE DOG
Wednesday, March 7, 2007 Happiness & Good Fortune 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
China Cafe, 1623 London Road
The Arrowhead Reading Council hosts a discussion about Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club or Grace Lin's children's novel The Year of the Dog. Eat China Cafe's delicious food and sip hot tea.
Cost: $7 for ARC members; $10 non-members. Fee due March 1.

Feature Event: Joy Luck Club Celebration at the Tweed

Tweed Museum, University of Minnesota-Duluth
Join in the festivities! Dr. Shin-Ping Tucker, from UWS, will give her reflections on the Chinese-American experience. Enjoy a performance by the Asian Lion Dance Team. Try the "lucky" cheesecake, provided by the Barnes & Noble Café, and sign up for door prizes. Admission is free.

 

JOY LUCK CLUB Seminar
Friday, March 30, 2007 Happiness & Good Fortune 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Duluth Public Library Green Room, 520 W. Superior St.
Cost: $75. Fee includes materials, continental breakfast, lunch and a copy of the text.
This Teacher Institute Seminar will approach The Joy Luck Club through an interdisciplinary study of the text and the background history of China during the mid-20th century. Participants will explore the universal themes in the book; discussions will emphasize characters' motivations, reader response to the characters and their decisions, and teaching approaches to some of the dubious moral issues. The seminar will be co-led by Dr. Raychel Reiff, Professor of English, UWS, and Dr. Robert Entenmann, Professor of History and Asian Studies, St. Olaf College. This event is co-sponsored by the Duluth Public Schools, the Duluth Public Library, the Arrowhead Reading Council and the Minnesota Humanities Commission.

At least one story featuring Chinese-Americans will be included each week. Storytime is 30 minutes of stories, songs and fingerplays for children aged 3-5.

Performance of THE MONKEY KING

Explore a variety of ancient Chinese movement and breathing exercises, Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Gong.

Chinese: Beginning Mandarin; Chinese Mandarin: Level 2; and Chinese Mandarin: Level 3 **

Cost: $35.00 Spoken Chinese Mandarin language, including vocabulary, sentence structure, basic expressions, conversation skills, and more. Yale University of Far Eastern Languages approach with audiotapes

Tai Chi - 24 Forms **

The Yang Style 24 Forms, also known as Simplified Tai Chi Chuan
