This Teacher Institute Seminar will approach The Joy Luck Club
through an interdisciplinary study of the text and the background
history of China during the mid-20th century. Participants will
explore the universal themes in the book; discussions will emphasize
characters' motivations, reader response to the characters and
their decisions, and teaching approaches to some of the dubious
moral issues. The seminar will be co-led by Dr. Raychel Reiff,
Professor of English, UWS, and Dr. Robert Entenmann, Professor
of History and Asian Studies, St. Olaf College. This event is
co-sponsored by the Duluth Public Schools, the Duluth Public Library,
the Arrowhead Reading Council and the Minnesota Humanities Commission.
