Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, published in 1885, is a novel that offers readers conflicting views: what is wonderful about America and what is regrettable about it. This presentation by Dr. Tom Zelman, professor of English at the College of St. Scholastica, will be about Twain, his composition of Huck Finn and how the novel, with its beauties and flaws, may be an apt choice for our national novel.

Jim and Carol Otremba, authors of A Journal of a Mississippi River Canoe Adventure, will be on hand to discuss their book and show slides. Their unforgettable 2200 mile journey took them from the headwaters of the Mississippi at Minnesota's Lake Itasca to New Orleans.

Huckleberry Finn: Mark Twain's Legal Firestorm

Twain's classic novel raises many questions: why does the 1st Amendment (free speech) clash with the 14th Amendment (equal protection)? Why have school districts around the country tried to ban the novel as "racist trash"? What happens when art clashes with community values? Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo and Advanced Legal Studies students from UWS will present a multi-layered analysis of the social, political and legal issues surrounding Huckleberry Finn.

A Solo Kayak Journey Down The Mississippi

Ron Severs, forestland manager for the University of Minnesota's College of Natural Resources, will talk about his solo kayak trip down the Mississippi. Ron's discoveries about himself, the river, and the people who live along it are the subjects of his book, One Good Story. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and autographing.

Take a Trip Down the Mississippi with the Adventure Club for Young Readers

Young readers will learn about rivers and boating and talk about things that Huck Finn encountered on his adventures on the Mississippi. We'll also learn some wilderness survival techniques and even build a miniature raft like the one Brian Robeson builds in Gary Paulsen's The River.

Huckleberry Finn: To Ban or Not to Ban
Monday, April 26. 2004 - 7:00 p.m.

UW-Superior - Rothwell Student Center, Room 111
Hear Dr. Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo and Advanced Legal Studies students present a hypothetical Moot Court argument to an appellate court about the banning of Huckleberry Finn. The case involves a claim by a community group wanting to ban the novel from the local school based on the 14th Amendment (Equal Protection clause) vs. Mark Twain's defense based on the 1st Amendment (Free Speech and Artistic Freedom). See the legal issues played out on the real-life stage of law.

Actor Kevin Walsh will take us back to Twain's time for a glimpse of the author's ever-intriguing intellect and humor. Enjoy music of the mighty Mississippi River as part of this evening from America's past.

Steamboat Win a Steamboat Ride on the Mississippi!

Attend any event listed here that is held at the Duluth Public Library and you will have a chance to win two tickets for a lunch cruise on the Spirit of Peoria on July 4, 2004. Tickets are sponsored by the Duluth Library Foundation.

The Spirit of Peoria will leave St. Paul at noon on July 4 and cruise along the Mississippi River for two hours, returning to dock at its departure location. You must provide your own transportation to and from St. Paul.
